Industrial & Infrastructure
Product Design

We have an in-depth knowledge of the demands placed upon industrial & infrastructure product managers & inventors.

Bringing Our Approach to Industrial & Infrastructure Design

At Design By Datum, we embrace the unique challenges that designing for the industrial and infrastructure sectors entails. Our focus goes beyond conventional product design. We specialise in crafting solutions that seamlessly integrate into complex industrial systems and contribute to the evolution of modern infrastructure.

Products designed in this sector aren’t just standalone entities;  they must work inside of complex commercial or industrial landscapes and enhance functionality, efficiency, and safety.

How we approach product design

Our approach to product design for the industrial and infrastructure sectors is underpinned by its focus on functionality, robustness and performance over all else.

We start by understanding the unique requirements and constraints of your project. Our experienced team combines technical expertise with creative insight to generate concepts which meet the brief and solve real world problems.

Then through meticulous prototyping and testing, we ensure that our designs stand up to the rigorous demands of these sectors. The goal is always a product that not only performs flawlessly but also contributes to the advancement of industrial and infrastructure systems.

The Design by Datum approach to product design

Our approach & design services provide an end to end solution for organisations, startups & inventors who are looking to turn their ideas into reality.

Concept and Feasibility

Idea Generation, exploration and selection.

Working quickly and creatively we use a range of ideation, sketching and modelling techniques to produce a concept package that works for you.

Design Detail / 3D Design

Defining features and design for manufacture.

We ensure your selected concepts are functional and manufacturable by utilising the latest 3D CAD software and techniques.

Functional prototypes for evaluation.

Create prototypes and weigh them against a testing criteria. After user trials, physical tests and simulations, we analyse the data and create design recommendations.

We use 3D CAD software and techniques to refine your chosen concepts, ensuring they meet the highest standards of functionality, manufacturability, and performance.

Pre Production

Getting ready for market launch.

We create drawings, cut tools and liaise with trusted suppliers and manufacturers across the globe.

Assets to promote your product.

We’ll provide graphic mockups, within realistic settings that will allow you to showcase your new product effectively.

Partnering with you to create impactful products

We understand that true innovation is born from collaboration. Your vision and insights combined with our technical ability and experience form the foundation of the product development.

Together, we craft solutions that address real-world challenges, whether it’s optimising manufacturing processes, enhancing equipment reliability, or improving overall infrastructure efficiency. Our commitment to impactful products drives us to create designs that not only meet the needs of today but also anticipate the demands of tomorrow.

What it’s like to work with Design by Datum

We’re trusted by businesses across the UK and Europe. Here’s what some of our clients have to say about working with us:

    3 easy steps to kick
    off your project

    You get in touch.

Explain your product opportunity and potential project to us through a free initial consultation.  We’re happy to sign an NDA at this point.

    We build a project proposal.

With your requirements understood, we propose a project plan including costs and timelines.

    Together we begin the project.

We will now work through the product development, communicating with you every step of the way

Are we a good fit for your project? We’ve brought together some of the frequently asked questions to help you understand how we work.

We can take a project from an idea all the way to full production & due to the staged nature of our work, we can begin working on the project from any point in the process.

Each project has its own unique challenges & journey despite being part of the same design process. Our fees are for our time to design the product from beginning to end, collaborating with makers of prototypes and manufacturers for full production which we will quote on during the process. We would be glad to discuss your project in a face to face or virtual meeting which will then allow us to provide a proposal.

You do! As long as there are no outstanding invoices, all data we create for your project is 100% yours.

Despite the nuances of each project, the process mostly remains the same.

Feasibility/Concept Design is where we use research techniques to develop a knowledge of the product sector & the necessary competitors before creating a set of concept design drawings which explain the form & function of the potential product path for you to choose from.

3D Development is a stage which we take the knowledge gained from the previous stage to the 3d modelling software which allows us to create the data necessary for the next stage:

Prototype & Test gives us the opportunity to create real representations of the final product using rapid prototyping methods which we can then test for fit & function with things like impact, PCBs, & environmental sealing.

Pre Production is where we gather all the data created previously & liaise with our manufacturing partners to prepare for full production, providing quotes to the client & preparing them for our handover.

Marketing support provides us with the opportunity to help with creating photo realistic computer aided renders for website, print, or e-commerce purposes.

We can provide support to your crowd-funding project & will tailor a proposal to suit your timescales & on-boarding needs.
